In Memory of Brown Cow 1974-2010

When Brown Cow was about twelve years old, he injured a leg in a cattle guard. His owner was going to send him to the slaughterhouse instead of having this relatively minor inuury treated (his leg was not broken, just bruised). Christina Bergh heard about it and rescued the injured horse. After recovering from his leg injury, Brown Cow turned out to be an extremely gentle and intelligent horse who was perfect for children. Christina's daughter, Doriane, who was three years old at the time, gave the new horse his name.

Doriane learned to ride Brown Cow when she got older, and began to compete in, and win, 4H rodeo competitions with him. Christina, who was only doing fine art tapestries and custom textile work at the time, set aside a commissioned project to weave a saddle blanket for Brown Cow so that he would look great in the 4H arena.

That first saddle blanket caught the attention of other riders, and soon Christina Bergh was weaving them for others. This was the beginning of our business, and Christina named her new company after the horse who started it all: Brown Cow. THe last years of Brown Cow's remarkably long life were spent in the cool mountains of northern New Mexico at Christina's cottage near Chama. He passed away from old age on June 20, 2010 at the age of 36. He had been part of our family for 24 years.
